Yellowcake (and Yellow Magic) Diplomacy : Plan B of a Plan B

It never was supposed to end up like the way it all did in 1945.

The original Plan A for America, from 1938 to late-1942, was to rely on the Norden Bombsight and the Sulfa Drugs to see America safely through any dangerous faint echoes from a possible European war.

Both inventions failed to work out anywhere as well in the field as they had been touted they would work by their starry-eyed promoters.

So, from late-1942 to mid-1943, there was an improvised Plan B.

One part of it was to selflessly share the development of atomic energy with America's allies , who after all had most of the smart scientists and materials needed to complete the job.

(And thus the atomic secret would likely be eventually shared with the whole world).

The other part of this Plan B was to selfishly keep word of the suddenly valuable penicillin from Allied civilians and the world.

The plan was to first use the secret penicillin as a weapon of war ---- and then to secure a postwar world monopoly upon it via an American patent on synthetic penicillin.

But by mid-1943 there was a new Plan B , a sort of Plan B to a Plan B.

The OSRD had lost its bureaucratic battle with the WPB to keep penicillin a military-only weapon of war.

The OSRD and its British counterpart had originally intended to only produce enough wartime penicillin to treat lightly wounded frontline Allied combat soldiers, so as to quickly return them to the killing grounds.

The perfidious OSRD comforted itself that it would still win its secret commercial war against its wartime ally Britain.

They intended to do this by being able to patent synthetic penicillin before signing a (deliberately delayed) treaty forcing America to share the patent with Britain.

But no commercial synthetic penicillin ever came forth.

So instead the OSRD had to watch in silent frustration as the WPB ensured that America selflessly flew abundant public domain penicillin all over the world to save the lives of allies, neutrals and enemy alike.

Pax Americana 's "Yellow Magic Diplomacy" began early , at the very height of WWII .

OSRD got its revenge on the WPB, as it shut Britain out on the second greatest discovery of WWII : workable atomic energy.

America reneged on its promise to share that secret with Britain - again by deliberately stalling diplomacy negotiations while pretending otherwise.

Instead it resolved to use its monopoly of the atomic bomb to selfishly force the rest of the world to do as America wanted : the so called "Yellowcake Diplomacy" of post 1945 Pax Americana.

America's selfless "Yellow Magic" diplomacy held hopes the Cold War might never needed to have got as bad and as expensive for all , as it did.

By contrast, its selfish "Yellowcake" diplomacy almost ensured that the rest of the world would pony up to divert scarce resources away from postwar reconstruction to building their own national Bomb, to avoid being bullied by America.

Two projects begun on the same Manhattan Island, both ending up changing our world forever : one for good , one for bad.

Jekyll and Hyde Manhattan indeed .....
